Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers - Pictures
The AKC recognized Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers in 1973. Although these dogs appeared in the country much earlier, in 1946, it took them time to acquire recognition and to develop a standard. They were shown in Miscellaneous Class before the AKC shifted them into the Terrier group of dogs.
Lydia Vogel of Massachusetts has gone down in history as the first importer of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to the United States. Also, many breeders keep remembering the O'Connors and Arnolds who helped to promote the breed in the country.
The SCWTCA (Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America) was formed to promote the breed in the United States. It holds sanctioned matches, obedience trials, and other events to perfect the breed's natural qualities. The club also encourages breeders to breed Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers in accordance with the official AKC standard.

Ireland is the mother country of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. Famous for their dogs, the Irish bred a wonderful ratter and farm dog. It looks like the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is one of the oldest Irish dog breeds. However, the written evidence of the Wheaten does not occur till the 20th century. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1930s.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers seem to be more popular in Ireland than in the United States. However, the breed is establishing itself as a good companion and a beautiful dog. The number of breeders in the United States is gradually rising.
